longer than mitt romney who talked about 38.5 minutes. that wasn't necessarily an advantage for the president. because romney was widely considered to have won that debate. there was less of a gaffe during the vice presidential debate four years ago. joe biden spoke just under 40 minutes. sarah palin spoke for 40 minutes and 29 seconds. biden and palin stood at podiums. tonight, biden and ryan will be sitting together at a table and that will affect the way they interact, possibly also the amount of time they talk. jessica yellin is at the media center. jim acosta is in the spin room. jessica, set the scene for us. what's going on? >> hi, wolf. i'm actually in the media filing center. this is where the press from around the nation, actually from around the world. there are some people in from koer countries, have come to watch the debate and file their stories. you can see around here, here's our sister company, mark halperin and people from press from all over the place. filing and this is the gymnasium for centre college. usually, they play basketball and sports in here. but tonig

attitude about the american people. approximate 3 0% of the american people are takers, romney points out 47% of people won't take responsibility. talk about my mother and father, talking about the places i grew up in, neighbors in claymont and francis. he's talking about people who built this country. all they are looking for is an even shot. whenever you give them a shot. they've done it. they've done it. whenever you level the playing field, they want to be able to move, and a piece of mind, the president and i won't rest until the playing field is level, they, in fact, have a clear shot and piece of mind. until they can turn to their kid and say with a degree of confidence, honey, it's employing to be okay. it's going to be okay. that's what this is all about. >>. >> congressman ryan. >> i want to thank you as well, martha, danville, kentucky, and centre college. i want to thank you, joe. it's been an honor to face you in this debate. we face a big choice. what kind of country will we be? what kind of country will we give our kids? president obama had his chance, made his choices.

their future attacks. their talking point tonight, as it was after the romney debate, he's a liar, he's a liar, he's a liar, and all of that didn't work. so n they will call him liar. but every time they prove to defy a caricature, it discredits future attacks. >> does it discredit those ads? >> no, and we'll know in 28 days, 26 days, certainly not. he did tie his dog to the roof of a car, in a dog carrier and drive him to canada. that's not what the election is about. this is the issues they talked about tonight. medicare. we saw how much time was spent. joe biden went through the stats, but then he said, who do you trust? and he sat there with the gravitas and 69 years of living, and the democrat experience, and he said who do you trust? >> we can do a little better than that. if i can. we can do better than saying the election will be about medicare. i know that's what you want it to be about. one thing we didn't see tonight at all, has not changed. ask anderson what has changed tonight. one thg didn't change, obama's rationale for getting re-elected. he didn't have any. nothing new

himself, even when ryan was talking. some would say he was annoying. the. >> romney has moved up, not that obama moved down. people thought better of romney and he began to move up. biden put romney on trial. my twitter, e-mail, on fire this is exactly the debate performance that democrats needed. biden showed fire. the one condescending moment when paul ryan look at him and said i know are you under a lot of duress. whoa, sunny boy! >> romney is a good man. he cares about 100% of meamerics in this country. with respect to that quote, i think the vice president very well knows that sometimes the words don't come out of your mouth the right way. >> i always say what i mean and so does romney. >> we want everybody to succeed, get people out of poverty, and we believe in opportunity and upward mobility. >> vice president, i have a feeling you have a few things to say. >> the idea, if you heard that little soliloquy, you think he just made a mistake, i think -- i have a bridge to sell up. >> what do you think? >> they all -- whatever he said is right. republicans loved it. democrats loved it.
